Until December 2021, Matthias himself was the founder of a proptech start-up. For this reason, it is easy for him to meet founders at eye level. He is open-minded and loves to talk to founders about their vision. Since starting at Gateway, Matthias has also been involved in structuring & automating all processes. His background in computer science helps him a lot. During his studies in Austria and the US, Matthias has been involved in the VC & finance industry and conducted research in machine learning and portfolio optimisation.

What do you like most about your work?

When you realise that venture capital is the area that will change our future as a society the most, it makes you see the world differently. Working here allows you to actively reshape the future together with impressive founders. That is priceless.

What makes you trust a start-up so much that you invest your money?

The most important aspect of start-ups is and remains the team. A good team is always diverse and fully committed. Trust is often only built up over time, but it is important for later cooperation. Without trust, it doesn’t work.

What advice would you give your younger self?

I would probably advise him to be more decisive. I think we’ve often been plagued by non-decisions recently that just hold us back in the long run. Oh yes, and buy Bitcoin.
